This Ramadan we celebrated the amazing Islamic book day. It was an online event hosted by Emma Apple and Read Little Muslims. We decided to add our own little fun to the day :). We got a few moms and their children from the community together for a fun day filled with activities and book reading. We had 10 participants aged 6 months – 7 years all of whom got the chance to participate and enjoy.
We read the book My First Ramadan by Karen Katz. It was first time for most of the kids to be introduced to the concepts of moon sighting, fasting and prayer in the form of delightful story and illustrations.
We tried to captivate the children by putting up decorations in theme with the story. At one point in the story where starry night sky is mentioned, we sprayed star and glitter confetti on children and they absolutely loved it! But too bad the moment couldn’t be captured on camera :(.
After the story time the kids had an absolute party decorating our sliding windows. The idea was inspired by Fun at home with kids and Modest munchies.
Our youngest participant was a most adorable 6 months old. I had prepared a special sensory bin for him with a little tit bits and he had bash of his own just beating his little hands around it.
We ended off by having another go at the story and a round of some healthy snacks for kids.
Munna had an awfully good time as he had been totally locked up at home due to me not having enough energy to take him out and with the rainy season you can’t do much anyways. As they say if you can’t go out in the world, bring the world to you :).
And hence began Amma Liz Storytime :).
I would like to thank the organisers once again for this event. It gave me a headstart to something I had wanted to do for a long time. Hopefully it will be more thought out and organized next time around insha’Allah.
